Exhibition Opening: Taniwha Whakaheke

Opening of Taniwha Whakaheke, an exhibition by Joyce Campbell and Richard Niania.
The exhibition will run from 30 July – 3 September.

Taniwha Whakaheke (Taniwha Descending) is an ongoing project about the waterways of Te Reinga and the Ruakituri Valley inland from Wairoa. It is a joint project between artist Joyce Campbell and historian and knowledge-holder Richard Niania.

The photographs trace the search for two serpents: the Taniwha Hinekorako and the giant longfin eel, by drawing on the mythology, history and ecology of the area. Campbell’s photographs of caves, gullies, pools and cascades are images full of mystery, where, in the silver, we might catch a glimpse of the Taniwha.
