Ho’omau – Free Hawaiian Hula Youth Programme

Over the course of 4 weeks, Pasifika Sway Trust will be running a free 2-day per week programme every Friday and Saturday teaching young people between the ages of 13 – 17 years the art of Hawaiian hula.

Pasifika Sway Trust based in Avondale runs a Hawaiian hula school named Halau Ka Waikahe Lani Malie, Peaceful Heavenly Flowing Waters School (aka The Hula Journey) and delivers programmes promoting health and wellbeing.  The kumu hula (hula teacher) of the hula school and the Director of Pasifika Sway Trust, Aruna Po-Ching will be teaching the programme with her assistant teacher, Dejealous Palota-Kopa (Te Atatu) at Corban Estate Arts Centre located in Henderson, Auckland.

The participants of the youth programme will also have the opportunity to learn from award-winning international guest artist Blaine Kamalani Kia from Oahu, Hawaii who has appeared on TV1’s programme Radar Across The Pacific.  Blaine will be performing alongside the hula school at their annual showcase on 31 Oct and 1 November at TAPAC Theatre thanks to the support of Creative Communities Scheme and Hawaiian Airlines.
