Meremere is a performance autobiography featuring the extraordinary stories and talents of Rodney Bell (Ngati Maniapoto), who left Aotearoa 12 years ago to pursue a career in integrated dance on the international stage.
Meremere powerfully layers movement, music, projected imagery and documentary footage to bring his stories to life in an hour-long work. His experiences, memories and aspirations are woven into a beautiful, funny, sonic and intimate performance experience that invites you inside Rodney’s journeys.
Whilst overseas, Rodney performed and created work with dozens of companies and traveled the globe but spent most of his time with Axis Dance Company in America, after which he had a short but intense period living on the streets of San Francisco. From this Rodney unfolds a series of incredible discoveries about who he is, what his experiences mean and what coming home back to his country, marae and to his hometown of Te Kuiti means for the next phase in his life.
Meremere takes these experiences, memories and aspirations and weaves them into a beautiful, funny, sonic and intimate performance experience that invites you inside Rodney’s journeys.
Meremere has had contributions from a variety of professional and personal communities that Rodney has engaged with over the past 20 years. The creative team for this season includes Rodney Bell (creation/performance), Malia Johnston (direction), Eden Mulholland (music), Rowan Pierce (AV), Tui Matira Ranapiri-Ransfield (tikanga, te reo, matauranga Maori dramaturg), Emma Willis (dramaturgy), John Verryt (set design), Ruby Reihana-Wilson (lighting), Ian Hammond (graphic design) and Robin Kelly (choir orchestration).
Sign-language interpretation and audio description will be available exclusively for the Sunday night performance.
A post-show forum and artist talk follows the performance on Friday 14 October.
