Pasifika Clothing Company est. 1992’ documents the story of an urban fashion label founded by Stan Tallon and Sjimmy Fransen.
Based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) the company was the creative expression of the emerging Pasifika and indigenous identity of Aotearoa.
The exhibition features design work by Stan Tallon and Sanaia Thompson (nee Chan Ting), photography by Leonie Johnson, Sjimmy Fransen and Angela Ngatai and showcases the label’s unique textile prints, screen-printed garments and T-shirts through photography, music, film archives and garments.
Pasifika Clothing had its beginnings when Virginia Tamanui (Ngaariki Kaiputahi, Te Aitanga a Mahaki/Ngati Manu and also from Ōtara) and Sjimmy Fransen (Dutch/Suriname Creole) started Tuhi Tuhi Communications in 1989.
