Tāmaki Makaurau’s unique Māori history, heritage and contemporary culture will be centre stage in a new festival on Auckland’s waterfront, Auckland Anniversary Weekend 2016.
The free, family-friendly inaugural Tāmaki Herenga Waka Festival is being delivered by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) in partnership with Tāmaki Makaurau’s 19 mana whenua and will take place on Queens Wharf and on the water.
It will include performances by contemporary Māori artists, traditional and modern kapa haka, workshops and talks, Māori crafts and kai, storytelling focusing on traditional navigation, and a ‘Koro Lounge’, where pakeke (older visitors) can sit down, relax and have a cup of tea.
